(2024) ‘The Overgrown – the outgrown’ are a set of chairs Lilla designed as part of the exhibition ‘Merry Chair go round - YRJÖ KUKKAPURO CHAIR
A-504 X YOU’ at the DONUT in Zurich, Switzerland. Inspired by the everchanging landscape of Finnish forests, the two chairs reflect a continuous observation of dead trees being broken down by other life forms, an inanimate object being taken over by new growths. Imitating different landscapes shaped by patches of grass, mosses and lichens, the new material overgrows and outgrows its host, the chair.
Both chairs are handwoven from sustainably sourced raffia, with ‘the overgrown’ being woven with the Finnish rug-making technique Rijiy, while ‘the outgrown’ relies on wire and in-shape-weaving to create a sculptural piece outgrowing the chair.
